Artist's Statement |
My work has consistently been about order-order which is created out of a kind of chaos. The swirl shapes, used in past series to conceal and order what lies below, have now, in this group of paintings, taken precedence. The result is a series of mazes and patterns loosely based on the New Mexico landscape. I have been greatly influenced from Native American cultures, as I have spent the past six summers in the Southwest mixing with and learning about the American Indian. The colors, shapes and spiritual beliefs have permeated this work. The huge skies of New Mexico and the brilliant colors of the Southwest landscapes have influenced my palette. The shapes and swirls are ordered into either layers which one can see through, or maze like patterns which interact with one another. I am particularily attracted to the patterns made by the overlappying colors. |
